The Japanese military's "comfort women" system was a system of systematic sexual violence established by Japanese imperialism during its war of aggression, and women in China and other Asian countries were victimized.

In Chinese textbooks, the comfort women issue is treated as an example of the brutality of the Japanese military's invasion of China. The Japanese military forcibly took large numbers of Chinese women to "comfort stations" in occupied areas of China and subjected them to sexual violence. Comfort stations are recorded to have been set up in various parts of China, including Nanjing, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Hainan Island, and the number of Chinese victims is said to be more than 200,000.

The Chinese government views the comfort women issue as part of Japan's militaristic aggression, and has consistently called for Japan to face up to its past history of aggression and deeply reflect on it. Chinese historical researchers have established the China Comfort Women Issue Research Center, centered around Shanghai Normal University, and have been carrying out activities such as interviewing survivors and preserving the former comfort station sites. In 2015, materials related to the comfort women issue, along with materials related to the Great Nanjing Massacre, were submitted to UNESCO's Memory of the World list. China considers this issue to be important in the context of countering Japan's historical revisionism, and urges Japan to face up to its history of aggression and take sincere responses to victim countries.
